How to get here / Access / Directions
We are so thrilled that you are coming to stay with us so we have put together a little guide on how to get to us
-
Airport
We are fortunate to have a regional airport located less than an hour’s drive away, officially called Ireland West Airport Knock (IWAK). It is also possible to rent cars from here. It does take a tiny bit longer to get to us via bus (Knock Airport 🡪 Westport) but you are treated to a tour of other towns in Mayo before arriving in the best one of all. Did you also know that this airport recently was recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an Age Friendly airport? The Old Mill Holiday Hostel also likes to welcome travellers of all ages. Please note that those 17 or under can stay with us but must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18; they also cannot share the same dormitory with others from a different booking.
For more details on Knock Airport’s offerings, please take a look at the following link: https://www.irelandwestairport.com
It is possible to also get to us from Dublin Airport. You can take a bus from Dublin Airport to a neighbouring town (usually Charlestown or Swinford) before switching to a bus direct to Westport. Or you can take the bus from Dublin Airport to Dublin Heuston Station where a direct line leads to Westport Train Station. Please see below for train and bus details. -
Train
Westport is very lucky to be the last stop on one of the main routes coming out of Dublin Heuston Station. Even if you were to fall asleep on the train, you are not going to miss your stop. Heuston, we don’t have a problem here! This service runs several times a day, even on Sundays. Please check www.irishrail.ie for up-to-date details, train departures and pricing.

Bus
If you decide to travel around Ireland by bus, then Ireland’s national bus service, Bus Éireann, is your first port of call. For those who do not understand the Irish language, ‘Éireann’ is a way of saying ‘Ireland’ in Gaelic. There are other bus companies but they usually are for intercity travel and rarely serve regional towns. Bus Éireann usually provides a reliable service but there is the odd delay and/or cancellation so be sure to check their Twitter page for up-to-date information. There is also a small discount for when buying tickets online. For those whose first language is not English, and for even those not accustomed to the dulcet sounds of the Irish accent, please be kind to the bus driver.
Yes, they might be difficult to understand but they are the means of getting you from A to B and even C. -
Bike
We are able to store bikes indoors overnight.
A quick tip for those travelling by bike: As Ireland tries to promote a bike culture throughout the country with greenways and cycling routes, Bus Éireann has decided to reduce the amount of storage on their buses, therefore no longer making it possible to bring your bike with you. Don’t be like one of our guests who did not realise this and ended up taking a pricey taxi ride from Galway to Westport with his bike.
